AbstractThis chapter begins with an overview of the community college culture and the community college's challenges and complexities. Next, the authors discuss the concept of ethical acculturation and the tension that exists when individual ethics and values conflict with those of the institution. Finally, they propose ways for leaders and constituents to work together to build an institution's ethical identity through professional development opportunities, daily activities, and decision making. This praxis brings together the ethical identity of individuals and the ethical culture of subgroups to clarify the moral identity and conscience of the institution into the larger cultural and ethical context in which all exist. The authors believe that having these strategies in place will help leaders and the campus community as a whole navigate the ethically complex and challenging issues faced on a daily basis, ultimately shaping the ethical identity of the institution.
